Wayne Wang, CEO of Go People, joins the team at My Logistics Magazine

Wayne Wang is the founder and CEO of Go People, an on-demand crowdsourced platform for courier services, offering simpler deliveries.

An innovative go-getter right from the start, Wang launched his professional career as a website and software developer, armed with a Bachelor of Computer Science from Macquarie University in Sydney, Australia.

Spending over ten years in the tech sector, working his way up in the industry from project management roles through to Director status, it was Wang’s time running a mobile phone repair shop that sparked his eureka moment.

“We relied on courier services to get phones between consumers and the repair centres,” said Wang. “The repair centres usually repaired the phones within half an hour, ready to be returned to the consumer. But, with traditional courier systems, it’d take two to three days to get the phones back, sometimes up to a week.

“That’s a terrible situation for any business to be in, and I realised I could use the expanding sharing economy to fix it,” Wang explained.

Tired of the inflexible and costly, old courier model, Wang founded Go People in 2014, developing the platform from scratch. His aim was to simplify the delivery process for both businesses and consumers.

Since its inception, Go People has grown at a phenomenal rate. Seeing on average 83 per cent month on month growth, passing the 10,000 deliveries being made a month milestone and raising over $2 million in funding rounds with investors.

For Wang, it has always been an aspiration to run a successful business in Australia. After holding a number of high profile positions at other information technology businesses, Wang has been able to apply his development skills to an industry that needed disruption, as he and Go People continue to transform the courier model.

Although there have been a number of new entrants come to market with a similar model or other on-demand services companies looking to expand into the deliveries industry, Wang is not fazed and believes Go People has a unique approach in the market.

“Parcel delivery can be much more complex than other on-demand services. That is because a Runner—our name for a courier—needs to be able to deliver parcels to multiple locations in the simplest and most efficient manner. That’s where our proprietary routing and grouping algorithms set us apart. We work out the best routes and the best locations for them travel, to make their life easier and, in turn, make them more money,” he said.

Go People’s algorithm calculates the best route for its Runners when they’re making multiple deliveries, providing cost effective, fast and flexible delivery options. It factors in current and historical traffic conditions, as well as geography, the spread of the deliveries (with regards to volume and density) and the difficulty of the drop-off locations (delivering to a hospital is much harder than delivering to a house on a quarter-acre block).

Adding all this information together, Go People creates an “Estimated Working Time”. It  give this information to its Senders, which is a very accurate assessment of how long it will take a Runner to complete all their given jobs.

By doing this and in creating a bespoke technology solution for the courier industry, Wang is helping to drive greater efficiencies for both retailers and consumers. Wang believes this will become increasingly important and a potential differentiator for businesses, as ‘I-want-it-now’ consumers continue to demand faster, more transparent delivery options.

Wayne will be writing a regular column for My Logistics Magazine starting fom next week.
