Christopher Chisman-Duffy – TomTom Telematics, Strategic Sales Manager ANZ joins My Logistics Magazine

Hailing from the UK, Christopher Chisman-Duffy has over 10 years experience working in the telematics sector. He joined TomTom Telematics UK as a channel manager back in 2010 and has since been helping its customers improve and optimise their fleets.

In January 2013, Chisman-Duffy decided to leave the UK for sunnier climes, relocating to Sydney to boost TomTom Telematics presence in the region. He was appointed as sales manager and is responsible for driving growth in the ANZ marketplace, as well as raising awareness of the overall benefits of telematics.

In Australia, the telematics market is still maturing. According to Berg Insight, the telematics penetration rate in the total population of non-privately owned fleet vehicles used by businesses is estimated to increase from 11.7% in 2015 to 22.3% in 2020. In comparison, Berg Insights estimates Europe will see an increase from 18.1% in 2015 to 34.4% in 2020.

“Australia still has some way to go to catch up with Europe when it comes to utilising telematics software for business benefits. According to our research last year, congestion alone is costing Australian businesses more than $3.37 billion in lost labour. Although telematics alone will not solve this problem, it can save businesses a lot of time and help ease the financial burden of their fleets,” said Chisman-Duffy.

Since coming to Australia, Chisman-Duffy has been educating fleet owners on the benefits of TomTom Telematics, from navigation, vehicle tracking and driver behaviour to optimised scheduling, fleet reporting and improved efficiencies.

“When we talk to customers, they tend to be interested in telematics for a single reason. It might be to track their vehicles or better understand the time their staff spend on a job. But, what they uncover when they use our software is a huge number of benefits they haven’t thought of.

“We had one customer, Le Fand Service, that saw a 50% reduction in fuel use thanks to telematics. We’ve seen Transdev, a large bus provider, implement gamification in its fleet management, leading to better performance of its drivers and reduced fuel and maintenance costs. Typically, we find businesses who implement fleet management solutions see ROI within nine months on average,” he explained.

Chisman-Duffy believes Australian businesses are on the cusp of uncovering the full potential of telematics, especially as the transport industry moves towards connected and autonomous vehicles.

“While there is a lot of talk about autonomous vehicles, they are still some way off becoming commonplace. However, as we move towards this future, we’re going to see vehicles become more connected than ever before. That’s where telematics solutions will come into play, helping connect vehicles and modernise fleets to take advantage of new intelligent road infrastructure being developed to support an autonomous future.”

Chisman-Duffy says the role of fleet managers will become increasingly demanding, strategic and integral to the company’s wider performance. He highlights five key areas that will continue to impact fleet managers – digital transformation, reducing costs, duty of care, green fleet, and business mobility.
