The UK government has announced a £34 million investment in a new HGV Skills Bootcamp in England, which would teach over 11,000 individuals to become HGV drivers.

The new HGV Skills Bootcamps increase the capacity for intensive HGV driving training with flexible courses lasting up to 16 weeks, giving people the opportunity to develop industry-specific skills and an interview with a local business. The free courses are open to anyone with a car license aged 19 and over and are ideal for new drivers, those returning to the sector, and those wishing to upgrade their license.

“These training camps will provide a further boost for the sector as we work together towards its recovery,” said Transport Secretary Grant Shapps.

The Driver Academy Group, formed by HGVC, Manpower, and Logistics UK to help with upskilling and candidate supply, will take the lead in the government scheme that will provide fully-funded training for thousands of HGV drivers.

“HGV drivers are vital to keeping this country moving,” stated Education Secretary Nadhim Zahawi. “It’s brilliant to see the first people with their hands on the steering wheel as they head towards new well-paid careers in the industry.”

The HGV Skills Bootcamp scheme is live as of Friday 10 December 2021. Candidates interested in applying can visit the Driver Academy Group’s website at www.hgv.academy
