Top European port Rotterdam handles 396 million tonnes of goods

Rotterdam, Antwerp and Hamburg, all located on the North Sea coast, consolidated their positions as Europe’s top three ports.

The Dutch port of Rotterdam handled the largest amount of goods of any in the continent in 2012, according to the latest figures from Europe’s statistical agency Eurostat.

Rotterdam, once the world’s busiest port until it was overtaken by Singapore and then Shanghai, saw a massive 396 million tonnes worth of goods pass through its gates in 2012.

This compares with the 47.6 million tonnes that flowed through all Irish ports in the same year.

Antwerp port in Belgium was the second busiest, handling 164.5 million tonnes. Both benefit from key strategic locations. The Netherlands has remained the largest maritime freight transport country in Europe since 2010.

At 543 million tonnes in total, the volume of seaborne goods handled in Dutch ports in 2012 represented 14.6pc of the entire EU.

Spain remained the fourth largest and France the fifth largest EU maritime freight transport country in 2012.

Goods being transported into the EU fell by 2.3pc, but inward traffic accounted for the bulk of all goods handled throughout the continent.

Much of this is made up of considerable volumes of liquid bulk goods, such as crude oil and oil products.

Liquid bulk accounted for 39pc of the total tonnage of cargo handled in the EU’s main ports, followed by dry bulk, containerised and roll-on, roll-off mobile units. The largest tonnage of liquid bulk was handled in Dutch ports at 274 million tonnes, followed by the UK with 211 million tonnes and Italy with 196 million tonnes.

Estonia recorded the highest share of liquid bulk goods as a percentage of the total tonnage handled in its main ports, reflecting large volumes of outward movements of oil products from Russia.

Dover in the United Kingdom was the busiest passenger port, followed by Greece’s Paloukia Salaminas and Perama, Finland’s Helsinki and Calais in France.

Container transport was the dominant type of cargo in Germany (44pc) and Belgium (42pc), but the largest volumes of goods in containers were handled in Spain (133 million tonnes) and Germany (128 million tonnes).
