Customs Clerk – Basildon (England)

Our client is a privately-owned logistics company, and they are currently looking for a Customs Clearance Clerk to join their team in Basildon. Salary offered for this role is £26-32k depending on experience.

The main purpose of the Customs Clearance Clerk role is to prepare Customs documentation for clients so that commodities can enter or exit one country to another, focussing mainly with Sea freight but it does include some road freight as well. You will also be working with the operations team to ensure all legal requirements are met in accordance with Brexit and HMRC regulations.

Previous experience is essential for this role, along with a good understanding of Customs legal requirements and the impact of incorrect information and/or Customs declarations – extensive customs knowledge would be an advantage.

Responsibilities of the Customs Clearance Clerk:

Work as part of a team, reporting to a Branch Manager.
Recognise client commercial invoices and packing lists, extracting data as necessary to complete import and export declarations.
Calculating Duty/VAT per consignment.
Liaising with importers/exporters and internal operational colleagues to obtain mandatory information for import and export entries.
Aiding clients on the classification of goods and their importance.
Entering details onto specialised Customs software including CHIEF, CNS, Destin8, NCTS, NES, etc.
Preparation and procession of necessary import/export documentation and declarations as well as the discharge process of T-documents, etc.
Liaise with Port Health or Customs officials in areas such as document checks, goods quarantine, etc.
Dealing with general enquiries from importers/exporters, concerning all areas relating to Customs Procedures, Tariff Classifications, Duty Rates and any other documentation requirements.
Keeping up to date with changes in regulations, laws and customs procedures.

Other requirements for the Customs Clearance Clerk role:

Ability to work under own autonomy whilst recognising when to escalate.
Strong communication skills both written and verbal, as you will be required to compile documentation and be able to interpret the legal requirements on behalf of customers in a clear and simple way, whilst dealing with various agencies on a daily basis.
Complex problem solving and the ability to engage critical thinking skills will be required, as well as the ability to actively listen and interpret concisely.
Although you will work as part of a team, you need to be self-motivating and be able to organise your work effectively and maintain records.
Ability to operate windows-based applications and any other software that is standard within the industry.
Ability to work in a fast-paced environment ensuring clearance processes are completed in a compliant and timely manner.
Excellent numerical skills are essential due to the calculation of VAT and Duty on behalf of HMR.
