Singapore has joined a global initiative alongside the United Kingdom, the United States, Japan, Germany, and France in reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from shipping.

During the 16th edition of Singapore Maritime Week, Minister for Transport and Minister-in-Charge of Trade Relations, S Iswaran announced plans to join 22 other signatory governments to the Clydebank Declaration for Green Shipping Corridors.

“At the plurilateral level, we support initiatives among like-minded partners that seek to galvanise action towards more ambitious outcomes,” Iswaran stated during his opening ceremony statement.

The Clydebank Declaration, which was launched at COP26, intends to create green maritime corridors connecting ports by implementing zero-emission vessel technology, alternative fuels, and charging infrastructure at ports.

Iswaran also announced the formation of the Maritime International Advisory Panel (IAP) by the Ministry of Transport and the MPA. The group, which focuses on key trends impacting the shipping industry, is comprised of 12 global industry professionals from companies such as Maersk, Boston Consulting Group, and ING Bank.

“To ensure (the maritime industry’s) reliability, resilience and readiness for the future, (it) must transform, and embody the essential elements of continuous innovation, boundaryless collaboration and strong talent development,” Iswaran added.

“This endeavour requires partnership across nations and between the public and private sectors, for which the Singapore Maritime Week can serve as a valuable platform.”
